Dr. Burcu Demiray wins Vontobel Award for Research on Ageing

URPP researcher Dr. Burcu Demiray has been awarded one of this year's Vontobel Awards for Research on Age(ing). This prestigeious award, endowed by the Vontobel Foundation, supports gerontological research in Switzerland from any field of science to raise awareness of issues around aging in society among the general public.

Dr. Burcu Demiray received the Award for her research on the use of memory among older adults in everyday life. Previous investigations into this topic have mainly relied upon data from surveys or experimental studies, but failed to address how memory is used systematically in everyday life to shape social relationships. Her results show that older adults use their cognitive capabilities in a targeted and flexible manner to shape important processes of social interaction, both within and outside their families.
